Springfield Tank

Part of sewing is fabric shopping. It may even be one of the more fun parts of sewing. When I first started making garments I was surprised to learn that the majority of garments are made with the minority of fabrics from the store! Fabric stores have aisles and aisles of what is called “quilting cotton” and it has super fun designs and colors and fulfills every quirky desire!

But you rarely want to use it for clothing! Woven apparel fabrics tend to be thinner or heavier, have more drape, more open weave. Or are just…different. Sure, you can make anything with the quilting cotton, but it isn’t always what a pattern was designed for and it may not look the way you want in the end.

But here’s a pattern that I think works really well with a “quilting cotton” It’s the Cashmerette Springfield top.

It’s a woven tank that has two views. One with a band at the bottom and one with three back pieces. I think it has a classic, retro look. And it’s a great staple / layering piece. I’m really fond of the view without the bottom band.

I made it with some Andover Fabrics cotton with black/white cats! I’m afraid that I used some older fabric that had been sitting around and now is hard to find.
